Petaling Jaya, 23 February 2009: HeiTech Padu Berhad (HeiTech), Malaysia’s leading ICT Solutions Provider, today launched a national-level breast cancer awareness programme entitled “Early Detection Means Life”, that will offer early detection breast cancer screening services to all women in Malaysia.
Officiating the “Breast Cancer Awareness Programme” launch in the morning, was the Secretary General of Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, Y.Bhg Datuk Faizah Mohd Tahir. She said, “Today breast cancer afflicts an estimated figure of more than one million women in the world each year and is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. In Malaysia, breast cancer is also the most common form of cancer and the number ONE Killer of women. The message we want to share with all of you today is - early detection can help save lives”.
The President of HeiTech Padu Berhad, Tuan Haji Safiee Mohammad shared similar concerns for the growing fatality rate in women suffering from breast cancer and said, “As a caring corporate citizen, HeiTech places great emphasis in assisting the government to disseminate the message to men and women to adopt a healthy lifestyle -through proactive health screenings.”
In line with the government’s aspiration to eradicate cancer, HeiTech will embark on a Breast Cancer Awareness Programme that will empower women to manage their own wellbeing, with breast cancer screening being one aspect of their healthcare. Statistics have shown that early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer surmounts to better survival rate and treatment. Having said that, we believe that the theme “Early Detection Means Life” is timely and relevant to the busy lifestyle we lead today.
The event which was attended by over 200 guests made up of Ministry of Health, NGOs, Associations and Support Groups, medical and healthcare practitioners and universities were also given a wellness talk by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Sidiq Mohamed, a medical and wellness consultant. Also present was Pn. Azean Irdawaty Yusoef, one of Malaysia’s most enduring artiste and breast cancer survivor herself, who made a special appearance to share her experience.
An important role for HeiTech
The Ministry of Health as well as NGOs’ and Support Groups in Malaysia are already playing a major role not only in educating the public but are also providing high-end facilities to meet the needs of women who are afflicted with breast cancer.
“In support of this ongoing aspiration, HeiTech has aligned itself to assist the government to identify leading technologies, developed locally or internationally, to battle this critical disease.
“To this end, HeiTech is working to launch a highly sophisticated radiation-free technology known as Bio-Impedance Tomography (BIT). This technology will be able to detect unhealthy breast tissues and breast cancer. It is our aim to adopt advanced technology in healthcare screening and make it affordable and convenient for women from all walks of life.”
The soon to be introduced device will be the first of its kind in Malaysia. Painless and highly efficient, the screening device may be used regularly by women of all ages for health prevention and management of female breast. A key feature in this device is that it is absolutely safe for patients as there is no ionizing radiation making it harmless to pregnant mothers and those recovering post-operative procedures.
BIT’s function is seen as a complement to existing methods of detecting breast cancer, like mammogram and ultrasound which is already widely available in Malaysia.
Reaching out to all Women in Malaysia
HeiTech is currently in talks with NGOs and corporations to make this screening test easily accessible. The nature of the device allows it to be easily and speedily mobilized at any location. As such public seeking screening facilities need not be limited to a hospital or clinic.
Further, a screening can be completed and a report generated within 20 minutes. Clients with healthy breast tissues will be given a result card; however those who have unhealthy breast cancer tissues, pre-cancer or other indicators of unhealthy breast tissues, will be advised to refer to her doctor.
